Colm Wilkinson in Concert - August 12, 2011

by Michael Englebert

He’s known for his 4 plus years as the Phantom of the Opera here in Toronto and his Broadway run as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables – Colm Wilkinson is now a Toronto Treasure being resident here for over 15 years.

His concert “Broadway and Beyond” at the Four Season Centre for the Performing Arts was a joy to enjoy not only because of Wilkinson and his gorgeous voice but all elements of the show were spot on, simple but effective lighting, a very good nine piece band led by Steve Hunter, first class arrangements and some of the best sound for a non operatic show I have heard in this theatre. It is refreshing to hear a pop act that has taken the time to get the sound right.

Also on the program were two singers supporting Colm, Susan Gilmour and Patricia O’Callaghan who each had their own songs in each half of the program. But front and centre was that jovial Irishman Colm Wilkinson who easily connected with his fans with a few jokes but it was mainly about the music and here Colm was in as fine a voice as I have ever heard him – his top notes were just spine tingling. The program was primarily focused on Broadway with songs from Les Miz and the Phantom plus songs from “Mamma Mia!”, “South Pacific”, “Man of LaMancha” plus on the pop side songs by John Denver, Johnny Cash, the Beatles and Leonard Cohen. It was a very satisfying evening with the audience giving Wilkinson a standing ovation.

I rate the show 5 stars out of 5. There is just one more performance this evening and I understand there are a few tickets left.
